Planning Your Baby’s First Birthday: A Gentle, Stress-Free Guide

A first birthday is really a celebration for the whole family: the first year of late nights, firsts and a whole lot of love. The birthday star won’t remember the details, but you will, and the photos will last forever. The secret to a happy first birthday is keeping it simple, planning around your baby’s routine and creating a space where little ones can safely explore.

Plan around the nap, not the clock

The single biggest factor in a happy first birthday is timing. A rested baby is a happy baby. Most one-year-olds take one or two naps a day, so schedule the party for the window right after a nap and keep it to about two hours.

What time should the party start?

Enter your baby’s usual schedule and we’ll suggest a party window that avoids the nap-time meltdown.

Every baby is different. Use this as a starting point and trust what you know about your little one.

Keep the guest list cozy

Big crowds can overwhelm a one-year-old. Close family, a few friends and their little ones usually make for the most relaxed celebration. If other babies and toddlers are coming, plan a dedicated play space so they have somewhere to go.

Create a safe space to explore

At this age, crawling and early walking are the main event. A soft play setup gives babies and toddlers padded mats, gentle climbers and a ball pit to explore, all in one contained space. Our sets are designed for ages 0 to 5, and adult supervision is always required.

Don’t forget the smash cake

A small cake just for the birthday baby makes for adorable photos. Set it up in a high chair with a simple backdrop, and have wipes ready.

Choose a theme that photographs beautifully

Neutral and soft palettes look timeless in photos for years to come. Popular first birthday themes include ONEderland, Little Lamb, Wild ONE, Sweet as Can Bee and Twinkle Little Star.
